Raja Ampat - Southwest Papua

Raja Ampat is the crown jewel of the Coral Triangle and the epicenter of global marine biodiversity. Spanning an area of 40,000 km², it features a dreamlike landscape of islands and lagoons. Raja Ampat holds the prestigious title for the highest marine biological diversity on Earth. No matter where you jump into the water, the contrast to other locations becomes clearly visible within just a few minutes. The variety of fish and coral species overwhelms researchers and divers worldwide. Combined with the impressive limestone formations, white sandy beaches, and islands dotted with coconut palms, Raja Ampat is rightfully referred to as "the last paradise on Earth."

But this paradise also has its dark side: marine pollution, a lack of education and healthcare, and the rise of mass tourism pose major challenges for the region.

Education – appearances can be deceiving

Raja Ampat is part of the Indonesian province of Southwest Papua. Although West Papua is rich in resources, it has the highest poverty rate and one of the lowest Human Development Index scores in the world. Despite government investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, the situation remains problematic. While many schools and hospitals have been built and the number of teachers has increased, the reality in the classroom tells a different story.

Teacher absenteeism, inadequately trained staff, and degrading forms of punishment are widespread. It is not uncommon for teachers to be absent for months at a time without fear of consequences. As a result, it is nearly impossible for students to pass national exams on a regular basis. The illiteracy rate in West Papua is over 30%, and the functional illiteracy rate is even higher than 80%. Scholarships and quality schools are usually only accessible to children from wealthy families.

Child Aid Papua is dedicated to education, environmental protection, and healthcare. Our Senior High School is the only school in West Papua that offers a degree in marine and ecotourism. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience through internships and environmental education, preparing students for the job market or university studies. The Junior High School is the only bilingual school in West Papua that offers instruction in both the native language and English.

Nature – A global biodiversity hotspot

The Raja Ampat archipelago is one of the world's greatest natural wonders and home to a fascinating variety of wildlife. Its tropical reefs, which form the most biodiverse marine ecosystem on the planet, are teeming with life. Most of the islands are covered in pristine jungle, and thanks to their remote location, many of the rainforest's creatures have evolved in unique ways.

Culture – from tribes and languages to spirits and ghosts

Raja Ampat is famous not only for its wonderful nature but also for its fascinating culture, which is often overlooked.

Due to a long history of migration and ethnic intermingling, the archipelago has given rise to a multitude of unique tribes. Although these tribes are similar in appearance and genetics, their languages and some of their customs differ significantly.

Raja Ampat – a true cultural treasure!

Geography – At the edge of two continents and two oceans

The archipelago spans more than 40,000 km², lies across the equator, and comprises over a thousand islands.

These islands are located at the northern edge of the Australian tectonic plate, separating the Pacific from the Indian Ocean. They consist primarily of limestone, which has been shaped by constant erosion to form one of the most picturesque landscapes in the world.

The surreal landscape is simply breathtaking!
